Padres vs. White Sox Game Recap 3/13/12

Starter Edinson Volquez gave up two runs, but the Padres had enough offense in them yesterday to pick up the win 6-3.  Volquez went three innings, gave up two runs on one hit and two walks.  He also struck out three.  Anthony Bass came in for relief and pitched three innings himself.  He was solid but gave up just his second earned run of the spring.  In his three innings of work, Bass gave up the one runs, three hits, and one walk.  He also struck out three.

On the offensive side of things, Nick Hundley went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI. Cameron Maybin went 1 for 2 with a  walk and a run scored.  Jesus Guzman added two hits and the Padres came from a 3-1 deficit, scored four in the fifth inning, one more in the sixth, and won the game.

Volquez, who has been working on his command with Padres coaches, has only walked the two batters this spring, both of which came in this game.  He seems to be locating his pitches better and throwing quality stuff.  Last spring, Volquez pitched in 9.2 innings, gave up 12 hits, 11 walks, 10 runs, and was entirely ineffective.  Thus far in the spring, Volquez has thrown five innings, gave up three hits, two walks, and three runs.  It’s an encouraging sign for a player who has the talent to be an All-Star.

The Padres will split up today and take on the Diamondbacks in Scottsdale and the Reds in Goodyear.  Both games start at 1:05 PT.  Joe Wieland will start against the Dbacks, and Casey Kelly will take the bump against the Reds.  Both are looking to make the major league club at some point this season.
