Padres at Mariners Game Recap 3/4/12

It was a slow start, but the offense got rolling late in the game.  Anthony Bass pitched two solid innings, giving up just a solo shot to Kyle Seager.  The newly minted Cameron Maybin was hitless in three at-bats, but some of the team’s prospects came through in a big way.

The Mariners scored first in the bottom of the first on the solo home run by Seager.  They scored again in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Seager.  In the mean time, Jason Vargas of the Mariners, on a pitch limit not an innings limit, held the Padres hitless over four innings of work.  He struck out one, didn’t give up a run, and didn’t walk a batter in an impressive spring debut.

In the fifth inning, the Mariners broke the game open with another pair of runs.  Seager knocked in another run on a sharp single to Yonder Alonso that deflected off his glove.  New Mariner Jesus Montero then doubled in Seager.

Things were looking bleak for the Padres, and fans were certainly worried by what seemed to be a continuation of the Padres’ offensive deficiencies.  However, in the top of the ninth, Yasmani Grandal doubled in two runs after Edinson Rincon singled in a run previously.  Then, with two outs and Cory Spangenberg on third, Jaff Decker reached on an error.  Spangenberg scored.

The Padres had stormed all the way back and tied it, then they handed the ball over to Brad Brach.  Brach gave up two hits including the game winning double by Johermyn Chavez while not recording a single out.  It was a tough loss, but the Padres learned a little more about some of their young players.

Andrew Cashner threw a scoreless sixth inning in which he struck out a pair and did not give up a hit or a walk.  Yonder Alonso went 1 for 2 in his Padres spring debut.
