Padres Morning Dump

The time was 1 p.m. on Monday when James Darnell arrived to Tucson. The third baseman had just been called up from Double-A, and he would make his Triple-A debut with the Tucson Padres in six hours.

SAN FRANCISCO — Three fans have been injured by a flying baseball bat during a game between the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants, including one woman who was sent to the hospital with a head injury.

The Pacific Coast League office announced last week that Kyle Blanks and Wade LeBlanc of the Tucson Padres have been named Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 27-July 3.

There sit the San Diego Padres, seven games below .500, fourth place in the National League West, eight games behind the first-place Giants. A casual observer outside the Pacific time zone thinks, “Eh, they’re playing out the string,” but the Padres think otherwise.
