Padres designate Jorge Cantu for assignment

The Padres dropped the bomb on Jorge Cantu following their loss against the Colorado Rockies and designated him for assignment. Cantu was just not producing in his role for the team. He wasn’t able to get comfortable at the plate and struggled the whole season. He may have done better with regular action, but he was not going to see that here. Cantu will probably try to catch on with some other team to try and find more at bats.

The corresponding move has not been announced, but it would make sense for the Padres to bring up Jesus Guzman now from Triple-A Tucson. We need someone to fill in the same role that Cantu had as the corner infielder off of the bench and a productive bat and Guzman has been groomed for that spot. This will also allow James Darnell to be promoted from Double-A.

The Padres could also be opening up a spot for Orlando Hudson who will be coming off of the disabled list soon. Logan Forsythe would then be the backup at third base to give Chase Headley a breather.
