Padres pound the Cards with small ball

I’m still in Rockies town and I got denied from the bartender to play the Padres game on the screen. It probably was a good thing because I would have been screaming the whole game and been obnoxious to all the Rockies fans.

The Padres are going to be a scrappy ballclub again this year with tough pitching and hard nosed small ball style. Clayton Richard took the start and gave up 3 runs early, but settled down to retire 12 of the last 14 batters.

The Padres battled to get to a tie ballgame in the 4th inning. Then in the 5th inning, the Padres came out with the scrappiness to put up 6 runs. It started with a couple of infield hits by the one and 2 hitters, Venable and Bartlett. Then our number 3 hitter, Hudson, laid down a bunt to move the runners over. Number 4 hitter, Hawpe, was intentionally walked and then Ludwick was walked with the bases loaded to bring in a run. Chase Headley then drove in 2 runs with a base hit. Maybin drove in a run and the pitcher even was walked with the bases loaded to bring in another run.

The Padres were then up 9 to 3 and the bullpen then was able to pitch aggressively to close it out. Great team win again by the Padres to open up the season with a 2-0 record with an 11-3 victory.

Time to watch the final 4! Great game Padres!!
