Cedric Hunter has been on fire this spring, tearing the cover off of the ball batting .435 with a home run and 10 RBI. His hot spring has earned him a spot on the opening day roster as the 5th outfield spot.

Utility outfielder Eric Patterson looked like he was on his way to taking the 5th outfielder spot on the roster until he was slowed down with a hamstring injury and he will start the season on the disabled list.

Hunter has the versatility to play all the outfield spots and will be a left handed bat off the bench. The Padres have plenty of right handed bats off the bench with Chris Denorfia and Jorge Cantu, but didn’t have many options for left handed bats.

Hunter will be that left handed bat off the bench and will see his first major league at bats in a few days.
