The Morning Friar - 3/5/11

Padres bench coach Rick Renteria will have surgery to repair his palate after he was struck in the face with a line drive that glanced off a protective screen during batting practice on Thursday.

Two perfect innings in his first spring start aren’t enough to make San Diego Padres righthander Aaron Harang a candidate for comeback player of the year.

But there is other evidence to suggest Harang could surprise this season after three consecutive disappointing seasons with the Cincinnati Reds.

The Padres rode a three-run fifth inning to a 3-2 win over the D-backs on Friday afternoon at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.

It was the second victory in as many days for the Padres against their division rivals.

With the possible exception of 32-year-old Aaron Harang, the 2011 San Diego Padres’ rotation will once again be full of 20-something arms. With one of the youngest big league rosters in baseball, that’s par for the course.

Former San Diego Padre Kevin Mitchell pleaded no contest Thursday to a misdemeanor assault charge stemming from an attack on a man on a South Bay golf course last summer.
