The San Diego Padres signed infielder Jorge Cantu to a 1-year deal. The righty will be mainly used as a backup to left-handed hitting first baseman Brad Hawpe. If Chase Headley struggles again against left-handed pitching, we will probably see Cantu get more opportunities at third base also. Cantu also has experience playing second base.
Cantu’s contract is worth $850,000 and is still pending a physical.
Cantu hit .256 with 11 HR’s and 56 RBI’s in 2010 with the Florida Marlins and the American League Champions Texas Rangers.
