Former San Diego Padres super-utility player Jerry Hairston Jr is close to signing a 1-year deal with the Washington Nationals. Hairston was a key player for the Padres last season making clutch hits and taking over at shortstop.
The Padres picked up middle infielders Orlando Hudson and Jason Bartlett this offseason and there was no more room for Hairston on the roster with those two taking up most of the playing time. It would have been nice to have Hairston off the bench to fill in for any possible injuries and for his versatility and leadership.
The Nationals picked up a good player.
