Chris Denorfia Signed to 1-Year Deal

San Diego Padres

The Padres agreed to terms with Chris Denorfia to a 1-Year deal and we will be used as the 4th outfielder for the upcoming season. Denorfia played in 99 games alst season and batted .271 with 9 HRs and 36 RBI. He has the ability to play all 3 outfield positions.

With the signing of Denorfia, the Padres will not tender offers to Scott Hairston and Tony Gwynn Jr at this time.

I still am holding hope that they find a way to bring back crowd favorite Tony Gwynn Jr. He is one of the best defensive outfielders in the league and he covers a lot of ground in spacious PETCO Park. He brings a lot of speed to the base paths, but he struggled at the plate last season. It is possible that we could bring him back to spring training where he would fight for an outfield spot.

I assume Baxter and Cunningham will be in Tucson. The Padres will supposedly try to sign Tony to a minor league contract. My fear is that Bud will continue to see Denorfia as an adequate centerfielder, which he’s not. Both Venable and Cunningham would be better in CF.

I can’t see the Padres playing the season with only 4 outfielders, they must be thinking of adding a fifth later by trade, FA signing or adding from the minor league ranks in Spring Training. That might be Gwynn’s best chance to get back on the roster.

i dont see them sticking with 4 outfielders either… AND I totally agree with you with Denorfia in CF. He is not one and there is nobody better at the position than Tony. I see us trying to bring back Tony to a minor league deal to compete for that spot as well
