Non-Tender Gwynn?

With the trade for Cameron Maybin, the San Diego Padres have a logjam at the outfield position and we now have to look at who may be non-tendered from the group.

Will Venable and Cameron Maybin have positions set on the team. It also seems that Jed Hoyer wants to bring back Ryan Ludwick to start in the OF as well. That would leave Chris Denorfia, Scott Hairston, and Tony Gwynn Jr as possible players to be non-tendered in the off-season. Of the 3, Gwynn seems the most likely with his .204 batting average. He is a fan favorite and plays one of the best defensive centerfields in the league, but he just cannot provide anything offensively to a team that needs a spark on the offensive side.

Chris Denorfia batted .271 with 9 HRs and can play all 3 OF positions. He doesn’t have the range like Tony Gwynn, but he would be a solid bat as the 4th OF.

Scott Hairston struggled all of last season and ended with a .210 batting average. He has more pop in his bat, but it is possible that we will see his last days in a Padre uniform as well.
