Mike Adams Placed on DL, Luis Durango Recalled

More news on the injury/promotion front for the Padres: setup man Mike Adams has been sidelined with an oblique strain, just like starter Mat Latos. Adams, placed on the 15-day DL, won’t have an immediate replacement on the pitching staff, as the Padres had called up reliever Ernesto Frieri for Latos, sliding reliever Tim Stauffer into the rotation.

Instead, the Padres have opted to recall outfielder Luis Durango. The speedy Panamanian, 24, was batting .292/.362/.318 with Portland. He was 5-for-13 with the Padres earlier this year, and is 11-for-24 in his big league career.

Durango will likely serve as a defensive replacement, pinch-runner, and occasional starter in center field. I doubt he’ll be up long, as neither Latos’ nor Adams’ injuries sound particularly serious, and even if they are, the Padres would likely opt to call up a relief pitcher fairly soon if the bullpen gets overtaxed.

More moves will likely trickle down as a result of this, and I’ll cover them when they’re announced.
