Castro, Cumberland Struggle in Futures Game

Double-A prospects Simon Castro and Drew Cumberland, both having exceptional seasons in the Padres system, played in the Futures Game today, with Castro as the starting pitcher for the World team and Cumberland playing second base and batting ninth for the US.

Castro was hit hard in his inning of work, hitting Desmond Jennings with a pitch, walking Dee Gordon, and allowing singles to Domonic Brown and Eric Hosmer. He also uncorked two wild pitches, but managed to at least get a strikeout of Brett Jackson. Castro allowed two runs.

Cumberland, on the other hand, was 0-for-2, with a flyout in the second against Hector Noesi and a popout against Julio Teheran in the fourth.

The US won 9-1. Castro was saddled with the loss.

Castro gave up two singles. A 25 hopper that got through and a bloop. How is that “hit hard”?

Now Desmond Jennings was hit hard with that Castro pitch, but he was the only one in that inning that was hit hard.
