Padres Select Dayton C Cole Tyrell With 42nd Round Pick in 2010 MLB Draft

The Padres selected Dayton infielder Cole Tyrell, 22, with their 42nd-round pick in the 2010 MLB Draft.

Tyrell, a senior, has some good hitting skills (.327/.411/.558 this year), so that’s certainly a good start for a skill package.

However, he’s an erratic infielder. Listed as a shortstop, he had an .897 fielding percentage and made 28 errors in 55 games this season–that’s not going to cut it in pro ball.

That’s led to the Padres looking at him as a catcher, a position he played sporadically earlier in his career. With solid arm strength and a good build, Tyrell may be up for the conversion.

With Bryan Altman and Tyrell, the Padres secured two catchers who can hit and are works in progress defensively. Of course, they’re both senior draftees, and the defensive concerns aren’t likely to go away anytime soon, but it’s not like guys drafted after Round 40 come without deficiencies.
