Everth Cabrera didn’t need long on his rehab assignment at High-A Lake Elsinore, and is back for tonight’s game against the Dodgers, batting eighth. Cabrera singled in his first at bat against Ramon Ortiz.
To make room for Cabrera on the 25-man roster, the Padres optioned rookie utility infielder Lance Zawadzki to Triple-A Portland. Zawadzki was 2-for-11 in a six games, the first of his big league career.
Hopefully Cabrera can round into 2009 form now, as he batted just .209/.274/.284 in 18 games early this season.
Cabrera’s return likely pushes Jerry Hairston back to a super-utility role. If Cabrera heats up, expect Hairston to give the infielders periodic days off and play some center against lefties.
